If you are in between the ages of thirteen and thirty, you love a television show, band, artist, etc. and have a social network...you've probably seen the fandoms. Whether it's the Sherlock fandom, Doctor who fandom (the Whovians), or those dang Directioners, everyone has seen some form of fangirling done in their lifetime.
I'm in about fifteen-hundred.
Anyway, because a lot of people who do not do their daily share of fangirling and may be confused by some of the stuff that goes on I am starting this new segment called "The Fangirl Breakdown". First off, today we are going to talk about Shipping. No you do not need the United Postal Service to do this (sorry, bad joke.), you simply need two people of any race, religion, gender and your undying love and yearning for them to be together.
What Is A Ship? Well lovely normal people of the universe, a ship is when you take two people and 'ship them', making the verb shipping. This simply means that you want these two people to be together forever.
How do you create a ship?
Simple, take two characters or people and say you ship them. Give them a cute little name.
Examples: Dean and Castiel - Destiel (Supernatural Fandom)
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone- Stonefield (my OTP. Don't know what an OTP is? Keep reading.)
Jack Barakat and Alex Gaskarth - Jalex (BROTP. like an OTP but, bromantic instead of romantic.)
What are some terms you should know?
Well first off, you should know that not all ships are existent in reality. For example, if you shipped Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber before they dated, you'd be shipping them. If you still shipped them when they went public, your ship therefore goes canon. This means that they are real, tangible, in reality or in the script (in cases of television) they are lovely. It's called canon because by making this reality, it damages potential of other ships becoming canon between those people and others. Still with me? Let's continue.
If you ship two characters from two different shows or two celebrities who don't even know each other (like if you shipped Morgan Freeman with Betty White or something, I guess) well, that's called a crackship. Sounds exactly like what it is, it's a crack in the reality of things to create a relationship you believe would be ideal even if not at all possible.
Yes there are ship wars where people try to prove why their ship is better than a different one. It usually ends in frustration and tears.
Also, there are manips which are photoshopped pictures of ships together. Sometimes they make gifs.
Hint: throughout this process, you will find out that fangirls are very creative.
Now let's move on to a word you need to know if you are in love with a couple so much that you honestly can't imagine them with anyone else.
This phrase is OTP.
OTP (meaning One True Pairing) is used to describe ideal couples that you want to love each other forever and you love them so much as a couple that you can't imagine them being with anyone else, ever.
OTP's are serious. Ask the Larry Stylinson ship. (Yeah, people thinking Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson are in love, it's a real thing. I wish I was joking.)
Now another form of OTP's are BROTP's which is just a spin-off of the OTP. For example, Stephen Gomez and Jess Bowen, or Ryan Gosling and himself.
You just want them to be friends forever. A bromance of foreverhood.
That's it for today, you can return to your normal acitivites. Class dismissed.
